IRONMAN 70.3 - Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is known for its temperate climate, stunning coastline and redwood forests, and this brand-new race provides ample opportunities to enjoy it all. Originally a Spanish settlement, founded in 1791, Santa Cruz has rich historic and cultural roots. In addition to being a hotbed for a variety of water sports like swimming, sailing, diving and paddling, its coast is considered one of the world's premier surfing spots. The Santa Cruz Boardwalk, which serves as the backdrop for this race, is the oldest amusement park in California, having celebrated 100 years in 2007. The race starts on the Santa Cruz Main Beach, east of the wharf. A 1.2 mile ocean swim will kick off the day. Athletes will begin the bike course at Depot Park as they head out on a rolling course providing numerous beautiful vistas along the California coastline. The scenic out-and-back run course traverses the Natural Bridges State Park and Wilder Ranch State Park, with the turnaround on the rugged ocean bluffs. Athletes will return to finish on the beach in front of the main stage at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 Santa Cruz will offer 30 qualifying slots to the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
